Provincial Tournament, 1999

The 2nd Provincial Sepak Takraw Championships were held a Robert Usher Collegiate. At times all four badminton courts of Usher's ideal gym facility were alive with action as four games played at once. The tournament was truly a thrill for the students who participated in this event, and all played outstanding for being in the new sport for such a short time.

Three girls teams played a Round Robin series after which Martin's Vex Venus Divinities were 1st with a record of 4 - 0, Holy Rosary and Campbell Collegiate's Buka Bangers were 2nd with a record of 2 - 2, and Martin's other team, The Royals, were 3rd with a record of 0 - 4. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals went to the same 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams in the final games.

There were only two teams in the High School Boy's division, Winston Knoll's TKO and Belfour's Lao Boyz. They played a 5-match series, which proved to be a nail biter! The games went back and forth, each team winning two matches and several of their matches going right to the tiebreak set. In the end, however, it was the Lao Boyz, brothers Bowe & Aenoy Xainakhone and Duke Chintanui, who took the Gold in the 5th and final match that went 15-10 and 15-6, with TKO receiving the Silver. Congratulations boys, and thanks for putting on a great show.

In the Men's division there were 3 Regina teams and one Saskatoon team … unfortunately two other Saskatoon teams were not able to make it. After the Round Robin games the Regina Vikings came out on top with a record of 3-0, the rookie team, Regina Riot was 2nd with 2-0, Regina Thunder was third with 1-2, and the Saskatoon Rebels were 4th with a record of 0-3. This placement changed in the finals, however, with the rookie team, Regina Riot, taking the Gold from the Vikings, who received Silver in a match that went 15-11 and 15-13. Saskatoon's Rebels went home with a bronze. What is surprising is that this was the first time that each of the Regina Riot players played together, all three are comparatively new to the sport, and, JUST TO DISPEL THE MYTH THAT THIS IS A GAME ONLY FOR ASIAN'S, two of Riot's team members are not Asian.

A big thanks to all the volunteers and to the YWCA and Engelheim Charter who were team sponsors.
