Sepak Takraw

Sepak Takraw in Saskatchewan
Through the '96/'97 to '98/'99 school years Sepak Takraw has been "introduced" to over 60 Saskatchewan schools by ASEC International, which is now Saskatchewan's official Active Member organization to STAC.

Students from about grade 6 or 7 and up have no problem catching on to the sport - and once they try it, they are usually crazy about it! One teacher commented, "All they want to do now is play Takraw, in Phys. Ed., at noon for intramurals and after school! They're hooked!" We anticipate most provinces in Canada will have an active Takraw Association under the umbrella of STAC within 6 years.

ASEC International, working with STAC, hosted the first annual, national Sepaktakraw Championships, right here in Regina, with the winning team being eligible to participate in the King's Cup (World Championships) hosted in Thailand.

Rational for Takraw:

It has already been proven over the last couple of years in Saskatchewan schools ... kids love Takraw! There are at least two obvious reasons for this. First, soccer has become the most played organized sport in Canada while Footbag (Hacky Sack) is experiencing more popularity than ever before, and the same kinds of foot skills necessary to play soccer or footbag are used in Takraw. The second reason has to do with the small financial investment required to become involved in Takraw, just like in soccer or footbag, especially compared to a sport like hockey. The only basic financial investment required for an individual to get into Takraw is money for an appropriate pair of runners (of which the cheaper, flat-sided, canvas runners are the best) and a ball to practice with.

As far as schools are concerned, they already have badminton courts and nets that can also be used for Takraw, so again, cost is minimal. Rural schools all across Canada, because of declining populations, are having more and more problems finding enough students to make complete teams in the more traditional sports. In Takraw, THREE is the minimum number required for a team, which also makes travel expenses for competing in this sport much cheaper. This is the ideal time to officially organize Takraw in Canada as a new and exciting sport!
