Learn how to play and/or teach Sepak Takraw from an expert.

EXAMPLE OF A 1-HOUR INTRODUCTORY TAKRAW SKILLS CLINIC ($50):

9:00 - 9:10 am

Whole Group

1) Intro. / video clip / warm up / stretches / demo. of kicks/spikes

9:10 - 9:40 am

Small Groups or Pairs

2) Practice Inside Kicks without ball, then with the lighter balls
3) Hand drop ball
  (a) kick it straight up to self, 3 tries; repeat with other foot
(b) kick it up high and over to partner, who catches it

(c) kick it up high over to partner back and forth without catching it
4) Repeat #3 a-c with Outside & Toe Kicks, Knee Bump, Header

9:40 – 9:45 am

Small Groups
in circles

5) Circle Game: keep the ball in the air as long as possible, passing it around the circle; no hands; up to 3 consecutive hits/person; bounces allowed between kicks (as long as the ball is bouncing, it's alive); remember to stay calm and kick upwards.

9:45 – 10:00 am

Teams of

3 – 5 players

Modified Sepak Takraw match (a match is best of three sets, a set is 21points). In a modified match a single set that goes to 10 or 15 points is usually sufficient. It also allows bounces, lets servers toss the ball up to themselves and doesn't count the number of hits per person or per side (the key is to keep ball moving, have fun).

9:55 - 10:05 am

Small Groups

2) Relay - person in front of one line tosses ball to front person in other line, who pops the ball up to him/herself then "sets" it back to tosser on 2nd contact (at end of turn go to back of other line).

Photo Album

1) Displaying Takraw pictures, promo products, equipment & materials and program information usually goes hand in hand with conducting clinics at P.E. Teachers' Conferences.

8) White Rock, BC, 2002. Canadian and Thai players toured many an Elementary, JHS, HS, college & university over 2 weeks, doing game demos and Takraw clinics.

2) These grade 6 students started playing their first game of Sepak Takraw near the end of a 1-hour Introductory Clinic ... and they loved it!

9) National P.E. Teachers' Conf. in Banff, AB, 2002. Rick Engel, teaches, demos and motivates teachers from across Canada to bring Takraw into their schools.

3) The secret to success right from the very start is to modify the game to make it new player friendly, allowing bounces, etc.

10) OPHEA Conf. in Orillia, ON, 2002 & 2003. Again, Takraw was a huge hit for Ontario P.E. teachers, who couldn't get enough and ...

4) By high school age most students have enough eye-foot coordination to catch on to Takraw fairly quickly, and it's appealing because it's new!

11) ... braved a very cold day to 'get their kicks' during their lunch break.

6) SPEA Conf. in Saskatoon, SK, 2002. Teaching Takraw to teachers here since 1999 has become an annual session that usually attracts 40 – 60 participants each year.

12) David Carnaffan, an ON teacher, has been instrumental in helping get the sport going in that province, and assists in the OPHEA Conferences.

7) HPEC Conf. in Medicine Hat, AB, 1999. Takraw was such a huge hit (2 sessions, 80 people) that teachers continued playing outside during lunch.

13) The myth is that only young, elite athletes with insane flexibility can play Takraw ... NOT true! Anyone can play Takraw, have a lot of fun and get good exercise.
